On this edition of Dive Travel we fly into Honolulu on Oahu, the capital and most populous city in the state of Hawaii where we examine its famous land sites, including a downtown site seeing tour, and the famous Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head in the back ground. We later take a driving tour and view the majestic scenic coastline surrounding the island and also visit infamous Pearl Harbor for a tribute to those who lost their lives in World War II.

With Pearl Harbor Divers we made some shore dives off the southern coast in swim throughs, seeing a variety of marine life as well as a boat dive to see the “Sea Tiger Wreck” located near Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.
In part two of this series, we fly to Lihue on Kauai where our hosts include Bubbles Below Scuba and the Hale Kua Bed and Breakfast, located in Lawai, Kauai.
We left from the south part of the island off Port Allen and ventured some 40 miles west to Niihau Island, Lehua Crater and Niihau Arches for an incredible three tank diving tour, passing a pod of pilot whales on our way.
Our land tours include a complete drive around the outer island, passing beaches along the way and then taking a colorful internal route into Kauai’s “Grand Canyon” with its rugged rolling interior mountains and canyons.
Later we take to the sky in a helicopter for a breathtaking view of the island as some sites are only accessible by air.

Welcome to Chuuk located in the Pacific Ocean in Micronesia about halfway between Honolulu and Manila Philippines. Better known by its wartime name Truk, the lagoon is world renowned for its wreck diving. Chuuk is one of four island states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia which consist of some 600 tiny islands and atolls that stretch almost the entire width of Micronesia, 1,800 miles across the Pacific Ocean. Divers come from all over the world, flying into the Chuuk International Airport to arrive at this wreck diving location that’s on the wish list of most wreck divers today. Here you can experience first hand the underwater museum, graveyard and the many tombs which have been softened by time and nature into beautiful living reefs.
In February of 1944, this island was part of “Operation Hailstone” in which the Unites States took its revenge on Japan for the Pearl Harbor bombardment by bombing the Japanese fleet anchored inside the Truk Lagoon. Here in Truk Lagoon is the reminder of that world war disaster in the many Japanese wrecks that lie close to the islands such as the Fujikawa Maru, Heian Maru, Shinkoku Maru, and approximately fifty shipwrecks and many planes rest at the bottom of the vast, but mostly shallow lagoon. Many of these ships are still intact; some still have human bones and live weapons on board. Today life on the small tropical lush islands inside the Truk Lagoon is laid back and tranquil but during World War II these islands were the Empire of Japan’s main base in the South Pacific Theater. Here we show you Japan’s military communication center that is now used as a high school.

Bonbini from Aruba! Aruba is one of the most Americanized islands in the Caribbean. It’s always summer here, and almost always dry, with an average temperature of 82 degrees.
Aruba is located in the heart of the southern Caribbean, 15 miles from the South American coastline. The island is 19.6 miles long and six miles across at its widest point, with a total area of 70 square miles.
Unlike Netherland Antilles sister islands, Bonaire and Curacao, Aruba’s topography and vegetation are unusual for a Caribbean island. On the south and west coast are miles of pristine, white sandy beaches that rank among the most beautiful in the world, rimmed by calm blue sea with visibility in some areas to a depth of a hundred feet. The Northeast coast is rugged and wild. The interior is desert like, with a variety of cacti and dramatic rock formations. The islands most famous trees are the Watapana or Divi-divi trees, all permanently sculpted into graceful southwest-bending shapes by the constant trade winds.

We arrive in the capitol city of Oranjestad during their annual carnival celebration, and the island is filled with lengthy parades with thousands of islanders dressed in colorful costumes.
We came here to dive the many wrecks found just off shore around the island. Aruba is recently becoming known more for wreck diving since having far more wrecks than it’s sister islands, but the reefs and marine life are spectacular as well.

Palau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean some 500 miles, (800 km) east of the Philippines. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world’s youngest and smallest nations.
Many well traveled divers place Palau at the top of their list. Surrounded by pristine waters off the western Pacific, the area combines the spirit and culture of the islands with tranquil ambience.
On this Dive Travel show we fly into Koror and take you on a topside tour of the islands many activities. Our hosts are Fish N Fins Dive Center, the Landmark Marina, and the Rose Garden Resort.
Being land based, most of our boat rides to dive sites are an hour or more away, but Fish N Fins also have two live aboard boats as well.
While many of the dive sites are in calm waters, some of Palau’s best dives are known for their strong current and coincident population of large pelagic animals such as sharks and rays.
Palau is truly a diver’s paradise, made up of over 200 mostly uninhabited islands, with a total human population of only about 17,000.
Here we snorkel the famous Jellyfish Lake, or Ongeim’l Tketau, which is one of approximately 70 marine lakes scattered throughout the limestone “Rock Islands” of the southern portion of the main Palau Archipelago. Here thousands of stingless Jellyfish surround you like a glove.
We also come face to face with nine giant Mantas on one dive, and many sharks and other forms of marine life that inhabit these waters.

| Raja Ampat Indonesia | $19.95 |
Join us for this special Dive Travel adventure as we travel to the opposite side of the planet to Sorong, Indonesia and dive off the Ocean Rover once again at Raja Ampat, (known as the Four Kings) located west of Papua, New Guinea.
Widely considered the planet’s most bio-diverse coral reefs, Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Archipelago has over 541 species of hard coral. This equates to over 70 percent of the world’s hard coral living here, along with half the known soft corals of the world, far surpassing any other tropical reef system. To date, 1,320 reef fish species have been identified, (and still counting.)
Considering that the benchmark for excellent fish diversity on any given reef is 200 or more species, and that over half of Raja Ampat’s reefs support this number, you might begin to grasp the phenomenon that is Raja Ampat.
This incredible diversity known as the coral triangle, stretching down from the Philippines to Indonesia and across to Papua, New Guinea, is due mainly to Raja Ampat’s unparalleled array of marine habitats. From current swept reef points to sheltered black sand bays to blue water mangroves, Raja Ampat’s dazzling sites will excite even the most jaded scuba enthusiast. More species of fish and coral inhabit this area than any place on earth. Marine biologists are continually discovering new life in this newly explored region, and for that reason many of the dive sites are recent discoveries.

 As the great glaciers of the last ice age retreated from Southeast Alaska and British Columbia, a new and beautiful land was born.
We take our dry suits to the most northern route yet in our series, heading to Vancouver British Columbia, Canada, and take a ten day cruise and dive along the inside passage to Sitka, Alaska.
In Vancouver we tour the beautiful city, take a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain, and take a spectacular helicopter tour of the surrounding snowcapped mountain ranges and the beautiful harbor before boarding Captain Mike’s Nautilus Explorer on this special cruise.
As we cruise the majestic 1,000 mile inside passage, the ever changing panorama of natural beauty comes alive. It’s here we witness hundreds of bald eagles, feeding, nesting and circling overhead , along with harbor seals, Alaska brown bears, humpback whales, and sea otters.
The Nautilus Explorer slowly glides through ice bergs that surround the ship, and doesn’t stop until we reach the Le Conte Glacier, which is located at the head end of Le Conte Bay directly in front of us. Here we anxiously get off the boat to swim and stand on these giant ice cubes.
We tour giant cascading water falls and hot springs, but it’s under the sea we dive, in our dry suits, diving in the 46ºF waters of the Emerald Sea. We find the special coral, seals and marine life that are native to this region and call this northern part of the country home.

 On this Dive Travel adventure, we travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. With the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, the U.S. Virgin Islands enjoy beautiful weather year-round.
On St. Thomas Island we were hosted and dove with Underwater Safaris, and stayed at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef. On St. Croix, we were the guests of Cane Bay Dive Shop, and in St. John we dove with Cruz Bay Watersports and were guests of the Westin Resort & Villas.
The Virgin Islands were explored by Columbus in 1493. They were originally inhabited by the Carib Indians. Since 1666, England has held six of the main islands, the remaining three (St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John), as well as about 50 islets, were acquired by Denmark, which named them the Danish West Indies. In 1917, these islands were purchased by the U.S. for $25 million dollars. Congress granted U.S. citizenship to Virgin Islanders in 1927. Tourism is the primary economic activity.
Here we dive the reefs, walls, wrecks and encounter the marine life. Topside in St. Thomas we tour the capital city, Charlotte Amalie, and the surrounding countryside. In St. Croix we are there for Carnival, and tour the Whim Plantation Museum, made up of 18th century buildings from this former sugar estate. We tour a Rum factory and the island’s countryside, and witness the start of an official Ironman Race.
In St. John we tour downtown Cruzbay, the Annenberg sugar mills, drive along the white sand beaches and tour the green hills and rainforest.

 Welcome to colorful, picturesque Curaçao, the ABC Netherland Antilles, the three islands made up of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.
The island of Curaçao was discovered in 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda, one of Columbus’s lieutenants.
The inhabitants were Indians of huge physical proportions therefore aptly called “Isla de los Gigantes” or (Islands of the Giants).
Within 20 years, the name Curaçao appeared on a Portuguese map. The island remained Spanish until the Dutch conquered it in 1643.
We fly from Miami to Curaçao for the eight day tour of one of the most colorful islands ever. All the buildings on the island are painted in bright pastel colors, giving the towns and country side a vibrant coloration. It’s a cruise ship destination, bringing travelers in from around the world to visit it’s historic UNESCO town center and top side attractions such as the Seaquarium, Dolphin Academy and the Kura Hulanda Natural History Museum, loads of shopping, and various island tours.

| Anilao Mabini Batangas - Philippines | $19.95 |
 Join us as ActiVenture Tours takes us to the Philippines for an incredible eight day Dive Adventure tour.
We depart San Francisco on Philippine Airlines for this 12 hour flight to Manila. We leave Manila by bus to Anilao, Mabini Batangas, about two hours south, billed as the birthplace of Philippine scuba diving, and home to their most vibrant reefs and diverse marine life. It’s also considered the nudibranch capital of the Philippines.
The municipality of Mabini is more popular to tourists as “Anilao.”
A survey, in 2003, by coral taxonomist Douglas Fenner, listed a total of 319 species and 74 genera of hard corals, including the discovery of eight rare coral species and 25% more than the average number of corals found in the hotbed known as the Coral Triangle, the rich waters shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 262 species of fish were surveyed in Balayan Bay where Mabini is located.
We stop along the way for breakfast and a view of the Tagaytay Taal Volcano, later arriving at the Acacia Dive Resort, a new resort being introduced to divers by Activentures. Acacia Dive Resort caters to divers from around the world.
On this tour we dive the beautiful reefs and view the incredible macro marine life, including nudibranches native to this region.
Anilao is located at the far end of a small peninsula and offers over 36 dive sites, including steep walls, shipwrecks and drift dives.

| Revillagigedos Archipiellagos Mexico | $19.95 |
 On this Dive Travel adventure we visit three of the four volcanic islands making up the Revillagigedo Archipelago, 250 miles off the southern coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in the Pacific Ocean.
It’s here we encounter the magnificent giant Pacific manta rays. (Manta Birostris,) the largest of the rays. These beautiful mantas love swimming and interacting with humans as much as humans love the interaction with them. These gentle, graceful giants of the sea have wing spans up to 7.6 m or 25 feet across and can weigh approximately 2,300 kg (5000 lbs.)
We fly into San Jose Del Cabo, rent a car and drive nearly 40 minutes to Cabo San Lucas, a lively resort town nestled on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, overlooking the Sea of Cortes.
Here we tour the town and the topside scenery, take flight on an ultra lite plane as it soars over the resort town, the famous rock arch, the marina and cruise ships lined up at the port.
A boat ride around the beaches reveals sea lions sunning themselves on the rocky beach areas. Here we dive with sea lions.
Later we board the luxury dive boat, Nautilus Explorer, for an eight day diving adventure 250 miles south to the islands. Here we find the mantas, hammerhead sharks, and a variety of other sharks and marine life.
The beautiful rocky volcanic pinnacles sticking up from the ocean floor make up the Revillagigedo Archipelago Islands of Socorro, San Benedicto and Roca Partida.
We also witness humpback whales rising to the surface during their annual mating pilgrimage.

 Join us on this special one hour edition of Dive Travel as we take you to Manado, the capital city of North Sulawesi Indonesia.

 On this Dive Travel adventures we travel to Grand Bahama Island, one of over 700 of the Bahamas Islands in the Atlantic Ocean extending over 500 miles, for a total of 100,000 square miles. Grand Bahama is called the second city, as it is the second largest city in the Bahamas, and the second largest island in the chain.
We take you under the ocean for a shark feed with reef sharks. The handlers have on full steel mesh suits as they dish out the food to the hungry awaiting sharks, while the sharks zoom over our heads.
Later, we join the Dolphin Training Center, one of three dolphin training centers in the world that take dolphins out into the open ocean to swim with snorkelers and divers. The dolphins could easily escape, but you will find out why they don’t.
Our host gets the kiss of his life right on the lips by a large 500 lb female dolphin. Watch as the dolphins do tricks with divers and snorkelers both on the surface and under the ocean. These trained dolphins star in many of Hollywood movies…we will show you one in particular who is a real showoff as she poses for the photographers!

 Travel Travel with us as we visit Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, on New Providence Island, for this edition of Dive Travel.
In 1670 British settlers came to New Providence Island and built Fort Charlestown, but in 1684 it was burned to the ground by the Spanish. It was later re-built and renamed Nassau in 1695 to honor King William III (formerly Prince of Orange-Nassau).
We dive with Stuart Cove’s Aqua Adventures, and visit the wrecks made famous in many Hollywood movies. Nassau, with its clear waters and abundant marine life is often hailed as “The Underwater Hollywood,” with such movies as Splash, Flipper, Jaws IV, Speed 2, Into the Blue, Openwater, After the Sunset, four James Bond movies, and more.
Meanwhile on neighboring modern Paradise Island, just a bridge crossing away, many other topside activities exist.
Another small private island known as Blue Lagoon, (a three mile trip by boat,) served as the location for the beach scenes in the movie “Splash.” It’s here we visit Dolphin Encounters, home to 18 Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins including the internationally famous “Flipper.” We interview their staff of instructors about the marine life they offer for those special encounters, including Murray, the famous sea lion.
In September 2006, Dolphin Encounters became the permanent home to six California sea lions that were displaced from Gulfport, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.
Several of the famous sea lions appeared in such movies as “Andre” and “Slappy and the Stinkers.”

| Ship Wrecks of The Upper Great Lakes of MI | $19.95 |
 We are in our home state of Michigan for this edition of Dive Travel. Many have asked us to dive and explore a few of the thousands of shipwrecks in the northern part of our Great Lakes.
On this show we visit eight wrecks, two in Lake Michigan: the Eber Ward, sunk in 1909; and the Sandusky, sunk in 1856 during the civil war. We visit two in Lake Huron: the Cedarville, the third largest shipwreck in the Great Lakes, sunk in 1965; and the William Barnnam. In Lake Superior, just off Munising, we visit four: the Steven M. Selvick, a 71’ city class tugboat; the Herman H. Hettler, a 200’ three-masted steam barge; the Smith Moore, a 226’ woodenhulled steamer; and the Bermuda, a 145’ schooner.
The Lower Peninsula is connected to the upper peninsula of Michigan by way of the mighty Mackinac Bridge, built in 1957 as the world’s longest suspension bridge at five miles long. Today it still holds the title as the third longest in the world. Topside we tour Mackinaw City, St Ignace, and Mackinac Island, an island locked “Somewhere in Time” where the movie was filmed.
We take an exciting, open air bi-plane flight over the Mackinac Bridge and Sault Ste. Marie and the world famous Soo Locks. We will also tour some of the areas historic light houses, Tahquamenon Falls, then visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point on Lake Superior. We culminate our visit in Munising where we dive at the Alger Underwater Diving Preserve and take a breathtaking sunset cruise along the famous Pictured Rocks National Shoreline.  On this Dive Travel Adventure, join us as we stay in the USA and travel to Morehead City, North Carolina to dive some of the ship wrecks that are part of “the graveyard of the Atlantic”.
We interview Captain George Purifoy and friend, Claud Hull, about the U352 German Sub which they discovered (sunk May 9, 1942) as we give you a video tour of the sub 100 feet below the ocean surface.
We also interview Divemaster Bud Daniels and Claud Hull about “The Papoose”, a ship they found. Other ship wrecks we tour include: The Caribsea, Indra, Spar, U.S.S. Schurz and Aeolus.
Most of these shipwrecks are surrounded and covered with marine life, including dozens of Sand Tiger sharks up to 9 feet in length.
We take you on a topside tour of the Morehead area and beaches, visit the new North Carolina Aquarium which has a replica of the U352 sub surrounded by sharks, and tour the city of Wilmington.
In Wilmington, we search for Megalodon, pre-historic, shark teeth. Megalodon sharks were the second largest predator on the planet, even larger than T Rex, estimated to be 40-60 feet in length and weighing 52 tons. They had as many as 250 giant 7 inch teeth, and were capable of swallowing a rhinoceros whole. The teeth are found on a fossil ridge 40 miles out into the ocean under 100 feet of water. We found two 4 inch teeth and many smaller ones. Those 7 inches and larger are worth upwards of $20,000, and have become a treasure hunters bonanza. Only 16 have been found (so far) in the world in good condition.

 Join us on the special diving adventure aboard the famous “Undersea Hunter” at Cocos Island. (Spanish: Isla del Coco) Cocos Island is a small isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. The island, made from volcanic rock, rises to about 2800 feet above sea level with a total area of nine square miles. Here, surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents and rich nutrients, pelagic animals of all sizes exist - from large schools of Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks to a wide variety of marine life. The only residents permitted to live on the island are rangers, located at two camps that patrol it as a no fishing zone. For that reason, it is abundant with marine life. This treasure cache is estimated to be worth over $100,000,000. For that reason, Cocos Island is believed to be the real “Treasure Island,” written about by Robert Louis Stevenson. Legend has it that Michael Crichton visited the island and was so taken with its prehistoric-looking beauty, that he was inspired to write Jurassic Park, (the fictitious Isla Nublar) that is off the west cost of Costa Rica, of which aerial shots of Cocos Island were used in the movie. | The Famous Kelp Forest and Giant Black Sea Bass of La Jolla Cove - San Diego | $19.95 |
 On this dive adventure, we travel to sunny San Diego to dive the famous Kelp Forest in La Jolla Cove. The Kelp Forest stretches along the southern coast of California. La Jolla Cove is one of the few places in the San Diego area that features “clear” underwater visits year round. It’s the perfect place for snorkeling and viewing ocean life. Visibility is about 30 feet. The cove is protected from fishing and kelp harvesting and is maintained as a marine sanctuary. In unprotected areas, the kelp is harvested to make vitamins. We also dive with giant Black Sea Bass, only native to that region in this cove. These giant Sea Bass range in size from 60 to 300 lbs, with the largest growing up to 500 lbs. While there, we offer a mini-tribute both to a fish and to a man. We interview long time native, Rod Watkins, NAUI instructor and owner of Scuba San Diego, who tells about a special friend of divers named “Blacky,” a giant Sea Bass about 300 lbs in size, who would swim up to greet divers and allow them to pet him. Unfortunately, a ruthless diver with a spear gun killed him, even though Blacky was in the protected waters of La Jolla Cove. Our tribute is also to a very special man, Steve Irwin, the famous Crocodile Hunter who was loved the world over. Also, in San Diego, we encounter one of the area’s largest concentrations of protected seals sleeping on the shoreline.  One look at the geography of the Turks and Caicos Islands and it’s no wonder this place is wall-diving central, with depths, just offshore, approaching 12,000 feet. The Turks and Caicos, about an hour and a half flight from Miami, Florida, are made of two chains of islands totaling twelve islands in all. Perched atop a shallow bank separated by a trench-like channel, the twelve islands include West Caicos, Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, East Caicos, South Caicos and Long Cay, French Cay, Grand Turk, Gibbs Cay, Cotton Cay, and Salt Cay.
